Maddie Alexander’s project “Testimony” investigates the barriers of accessing gender-affirming care for trans folks. In this installation of Testimony, they focus on time in relation to medical transition. He creates ritualistic assemblages out of sacred trans items: his testosterone bottles, medical documents, and archival trans imagery. In these assemblage works documenting their life and lineage as a trans person; these altars are spaces of reflection, created through intentionally durational methods. These works consider Alexander’s experiences of time passing, waiting for care. By creating an archive of their own transitional lineage, shared alongside other archival trans lineages, these histories meet together in the worlds we’ve created for ourselves.
Arts Atlantic Symposium attendees are invited to join presenting artist Maddie Alexander at an Artist talk and collaborative cyanotype exercise as a part of their project; Testimony. He will share reflections around the research behind the works, while facilitating an exercise in creating a large-scale collaborative cyanotype print which will expose throughout the duration of the presentation; acting as a living document of our exchanges, conversations, and connections.

Le projet de Maddie Alexander, qui s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un travail de recherche en cours depuis trois ans, étudie les obstacles à l'accès des personnes transgenres à des soins adaptés à leur sexe. Dans cette installation de Témoignage, iel se concentre sur la durée de la transition médicale. Iel crée des assemblages rituels à partir d'objets trans sacrés : ses flacons de testostérone, des documents médicaux et des images d'archives. Ces œuvres d'assemblage documentent sa vie et sa lignée en tant que personne trans; ces autels sont des espaces de réflexion, créés par des méthodes intentionnellement durables. Ce travail prend en compte les expériences d'Alexander concernant le temps qui passe et l’attente des soins. En créant une archive de leur propre lignée transitionnelle, partagée avec d'autres lignées trans archivées, ces histoires se rencontrent dans les mondes que nous avons créés pour nous-mêmes.Item description

EN: Join Kay Macdonald, Kijipuktuk-based artist, facilitator, activist and arts administrator for an in-depth facilitated discussion on equity frameworks and anti-oppression practices within arts organizations, presented by Atlantis: Association of Artist Run Centre from the Atlantic. Kay will be hosting a skills and resource-sharing discussion centred on what tangible practices arts organizations across Atlantic Canada are using and what organizations can be doing to support the brilliance and thriving of our most under and misrepresented artists and audiences.
The conversation will focus on how policy can be a fundamental tool for social change and how arts organizations can use policy development to support an ongoing and responsive anti-oppression practice. Macdonald will introduce Atlantis’ new Arts Equity Policy Toolkit, a multi-year project by Atlantis that provides small arts organizations with templates, assessments and guides to creating their own equity policies.

"The Confidence Lab" is a transformative and fun workshop tailored for artists eager to refine their oral presentation skills and boost their confidence speaking in front of a crowd. This dynamic session will help participants discover and cultivate their unique voices, enabling them to become captivating public speakers.
Artists of all disciplines share a common need for effective self-representation in public, from exhibition openings, to album releases, to conferences. The Confidence Lab will create a safe space for all creatives to find and hone their verbal communication style, fostering a powerful bonding experience within the interdisciplinary arts community.
The session will begin with informal activities that break down communication barriers and create a supportive environment. Through these engaging exercises, participants will explore their personality, and get comfortable within the group.
Then the real transformation begins. Participants will dip their toes into storytelling, starting with topics and stories that are familiar to them. This is a great way to see the essence of who a person is, and let their passion shine through.
A key focus for this session will be to develop charisma and presence. Participants will learn to enhance physical and vocal delivery, from body language to tone modulation, ensuring their messages are heard and felt.
By the end, participants will emerge with a newfound confidence in sharing their authentic self and work with the world, in person. "The Confidence Lab" is more than a workshop; it's a chance to get to know yourself in a whole new way!

Le labo de la confiance créera un espace sûr pour toutes les personnes créatrices afin qu'elles puissent trouver et affiner leur style de communication verbale, favorisant ainsi une puissante expérience de rapprochement au sein de la communauté artistique interdisciplinaire.
La session commencera par des activités informelles qui éliminent les barrières de communication et créent un environnement favorable. Grâce à ces exercices engageants, les personnes participantes exploreront leur personnalité et se sentiront à l'aise au sein du groupe.
Ensuite, la véritable transformation commence. Les personnes participantes s'initieront à la narration, en commençant par des histoires et des thèmes familiers. C'est un excellent moyen de découvrir l'essence d'une personne et de laisser transparaître sa passion.

There are endless ways to write about art in all of its forms, but if you tell someone that’s your job, the first thing they’re likely to assume is that you write reviews, though the fact of the matter is that very few people actually do. In other words, the art/theatre/dance/music/literature writer is a key character in the mythology of the arts world, as a champion who spots talent and interprets art for the public and simultaneously as a villain who serves as a gatekeeper and a killjoy.  
There’s a fresh round of debate about the state of arts writing today — both in Atlantic Canada and in much of North America. Is writing about the arts — whether visual arts, the performing arts, or literature — now too positive, too promotional, or not critical enough? What should the goal of writing about the arts even be? How should arts writers incorporate decolonizing tools and vocabulary? And if there is a problem, what’s the cause and what’s to be done about it?  
The State of the Art (of writing about the arts) addresses the present and future of arts writing. The session will feature presentations from five arts writers in Atlantic Canada (Ray Cronin, curator of Canadian Art, Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and publisher, Billie; Thaddeus Holownia, publisher, Anchorage Press; Matt Carter, founder, gridcitymagazine.com; Sue Sinclair, editor, The Fiddlehead; and Fazeela Jiwa, acquiring and developmental editor, Fernwood Publishing) followed by a panel discussion moderated by Susanne Alexander (publisher, Goose Lane Editions).
 This panel discussion will address some of the critical issues of writing about and for various art forms (including but not limited to the visual, literary, and performing arts); how different modes of publishing and distribution have transformed relations between artists, writers, and readers; and whether the language and conventions associated with arts writing require a new approach.

Ainsi, le rédacteur d'art/théâtre/danse/musique/littérature est un personnage clé dans la mythologie du monde artistique, à la fois comme un champion qui repère les talents et interprète l'art pour le public et comme un méchant qui joue le rôle de gardien et de rabat-joie.  
L'état des écrits sur les arts fait l'objet d'un nouveau débat, tant au Canada atlantique que dans la majeure partie de l'Amérique du Nord. L'écriture sur les arts - qu'il s'agisse des arts visuels, des arts de la scène ou de la littérature - est-elle maintenant trop positive, trop promotionnelle ou pas assez critique? Quel devrait être l'objectif de l'écriture sur les arts? Comment les auteurs d'art pourraient incorporer des outils et du vocabulaire décolonisateurs? Et s'il y a un problème, quelle en est la cause et que faut-il faire pour y remédier?  
L'état de l'art (écrire sur les arts) aborde le présent et l'avenir de la rédaction sur les arts. This facilitated discussion will cover how relationship-building and openness can be some of the best tools at an organization’s disposal to create access infrastructure, and how accessibility can and should be an ongoing, evolving and collaborative effort.

At the inaugural Arts Atlantic Symposium in Menahkwesk, the Mi’kmaq porcupine quill artists Tara Francis and Starlit Simon shared their work as part of an event titled “Resistance, Reciprocity and Roadkill.” This was, perhaps, the most well-attended event of the symposium. The artists were heartened by the enthusiastic response to their work until the very first question of the Q&A period, which was not actually about their art at all but was instead the seemingly inevitable: can settlers do quill work?
This is a question that lets the air out of the room. For some artists, it feels predatory, and it puts them on edge. Inescapably, it takes the focus off the Wabanaki artist(s) and their work and bestows it upon settlers in the audience who are thinking about themselves. It is a complicated, nuanced, polarizing, challenging question, and it’s not one that should be posed on the fly to Wabanaki artists who are seeking to share about their work and celebrate their accomplishments in culturally safe and respectful environments. And as Tara and Starlit explained at the end of their talk, it is not a question that can be easily shouldered by individuals.
Despite all of this, it is an important question, one about which Wabanaki artists often have strong feelings. For this panel, Tara Francis, Starlit Simon, Gina Brooks, and Rachel Bryant will create a space for this question – not for answering it, necessarily, but for contextualizing it, containing it, and attempting to move this discussion about how we can relate to one another forward. The panelists will also talk about treaty and consider more generally what it means to collaborate or to work alongside one another “in a good way” on these unceded and unsurrendered Wabanaki homelands.

Lors du premier Symposium Arts Atlantique à Menahkwesk, les artistes micmacs Tara Francis et Starlit Simon ont présenté leur travail dans le cadre d'un événement intitulé Resistance, Reciprocity and Roadkill (Résistance, réciprocité et animal tué sur la route). Cet événement a sans doute été le plus fréquenté du symposium. Les artistes ont été encouragés par l'accueil enthousiaste réservé à leur travail jusqu'à la toute première question de la période de questions et réponses, qui ne portait pas du tout sur leur art, mais plutôt sur une question apparemment inévitable : les colons peuvent-ils faire du travail à la plume d'oie? C'est une question qui vide l'air de la pièce. Pour certains artistes, elle a un caractère prédateur et les met sur les nerfs. Inévitablement, elle détourne l'attention des artistes abénaquis et de leur travail pour la porter sur les colons du public qui pensent à eux-mêmes. C'est une question compliquée, nuancée, polarisante et difficile à poser aux artistes abénaquis qui cherchent à partager leur travail et à célébrer leurs réalisations dans un cadre culturel sûr et respectueux. Et comme Tara et Starlit l'ont expliqué à la fin de leur discours, ce n'est pas une question qui peut être facilement prise en charge par les individus.
Malgré tout, il s'agit d'une question importante, à propos de laquelle les artistes abénaquis ont souvent des sentiments très forts. Pour ce panel, Tara Francis, Starlit Simon, Gina Brooks et Rachel Bryant créeront un espace pour cette question - non pas pour y répondre, nécessairement, mais pour la contextualiser, la contenir et tenter de faire avancer cette discussion sur la façon dont nous pouvons nous relier les uns aux autres. Les panélistes parleront également des traités et examineront plus généralement ce que signifie collaborer ou travailler les uns avec les autres "d'une bonne manière" sur ces terres abénaquises non cédées.

Drum Machines presents an immersive electro-acoustic improvisation playground. Drag Artists Unite is a collaboration between some of the most prolific drag artists in the Province. With New Brunswick's Diverse cultural background, we highlight both Anglophone and Francophone Drag Artists that are at the top of their game. This project will display the diverse mix of drag styles we have in the province from comedy to kooky to Kingly we've got it covered. Featuring Rose Beef, Quebec Born Acadien Drag Queen, comedian and actor. Justin Toodeep from Saint John, a charismatic Drag King who makes waves with fierce political statements offstage and high energy dance and bawdy comedy onstage. Barb Wire, an Acadian Drag Queen Auntie from Fredericton who is a fibre artist that uses her skills to create fierce, fabulous and fantastical looks. Heather Silk is the silkiest Queen on the East Coast of Canada. Hailing from Fredericton, this queen is a professional hairstylist and Drag comedian.

Ce projet présentera le mélange diversifié de styles de drag que nous avons dans la province, depuis la comédie jusqu'au kooky en passant par le cinglé, nous avons tout ce qu'il faut. Il mettra en vedette Rose Beef, une drag queen, comédienne et actrice acadienne née au Québec; Justin Toodeep, de Saint-Jean, un drag king charismatique qui fait des vagues avec des déclarations politiques féroces en dehors de la scène, ainsi que des danses énergiques et des comédies paillardes sur scène; Barb Wire, une tante drag queen acadienne de Fredericton, qui est une artiste de la fibre qui utilise ses compétences pour créer des looks féroces, fabuleux et fantastiques; et enfin Heather Silk, la reine la plus soyeuse de la côte est du Canada. Originaire de Fredericton, cette reine est coiffeuse et comédienne de drag.

This project is a seamless (without breaks) musical performance, with the audience welcome to be seated and/or to dance. I/O is an ongoing musical collaboration between Devon Ross & Devin Krauskopf focusing on improvisation, communication, and a mix of synthesized sounds and recognizable instruments including violin & guitar. This project brings together the concept of a DJ making live beats with the performance styles of traditional instruments. All the music is made in the moment. The musicians work together in an adaptive, generative call and response, creating new pathways for sonic movement. Musical complexity is built up through cascading loops and themes coming in and dying away dynamically. Amid the constantly shifting ground of the times we live in, a focus on improvisation feels both prudent and necessary. We navigate the uncertainty with curiosity, adaptability, and an embodied sonic practice.
Monica Lacey will create a custom videoscape to accompany the music performance using footage created with original images, stop-motion, and AI image generation, responding to the alchemical movements we pursue in our improvised set.
Converging in this project are musical styles, with Krauskopf having a background of classical guitar training, Ross trained in Jazz violin, and meeting on the common ground of a love of electronic dance music and the thrill of improvising together. Monica will be weaving together analog and digital media, as well as human-made and AI-made imagery, echoing the fusion of technology and tradition in the music.

Ce projet est une performance musicale ininterrompue (sans pause), le public étant invité à s'asseoir ou à danser. I/O est une collaboration musicale permanente entre Devon Ross et Devin Krauskopf, axée sur l'improvisation, la communication et un mélange de sons synthétiques et d'instruments reconnaissables, comme le violon et la guitare. Il associe le concept d'un animateur produisant des rythmes en direct aux styles de performance des instruments traditionnels. Toute la musique est créée dans l'instant. Les musiciens travaillent ensemble dans le cadre d'un appel et d'une réponse adaptatifs et génératifs, créant de nouvelles voies pour le mouvement sonore. La complexité musicale est construite par des boucles en cascade et des thèmes qui entrent et disparaissent de manière dynamique. Dans le contexte en constante évolution de la durée dans laquelle nous vivons, l'accent mis sur l'improvisation semble à la fois prudent et nécessaire. Nous naviguons dans l'incertitude avec curiosité, adaptabilité et pratique sonore incarnée.
Monica Lacey créera un paysage vidéo personnalisé pour accompagner la performance musicale en utilisant des séquences créées à partir d'images originales, de stop-motion et de génération d'images par IA, répondant ainsi aux mouvements alchimiques que nous poursuivons dans notre prestation improvisée.
Les styles musicaux convergent dans ce projet : Krauskopf a une formation de guitariste classique, Ross a reçu une formation de violoniste de jazz, et ils se rencontrent sur le terrain commun de l'amour de la musique de danse électronique et de l'excitation d'improviser ensemble. Found in Translation is a fun, interactive performance that plays wth collaboration and participation in a quirky and accessible way. The piece is at once structured and personalized, interdisciplinary and relatable. It explores the convergence of visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, textual, and linguistic elements.
A durational performance for 6 performers, Found in Translation works as a kind of “artistic assembly line”. Audience members to set the piece in motion through simple object arrangements, and receive a creative gift at the end. The work playfully inquires into creative process through haptics, object arrangement, verbal description, drawing, dancing/moving, writing, language and recitation. The piece is performed “en Franglais” by a bilingual cast of Atlantic-based artists working in dance, theatre, and performance.
Through a time-based live art experience, this work brings people together- expert and non-expert, performers and audience, visiting and local- through creative prompts that celebrate play, collective imagination, and teamwork. The piece invites a continuous sense of discovery while making transparent its own creative mechanism.

Trouvé dans la traduction est un spectacle amusant et interactif qui joue avec la collaboration et la participation d'une manière excentrique et accessible. La pièce est à la fois structurée et personnalisée, interdisciplinaire et accessible. Elle explore la convergence d'éléments visuels, auditifs, kinesthésiques, textuels et linguistiques.
Trouvé dans la traduction est une performance de longue durée pour 6 interprètes, qui fonctionne comme une sorte de chaîne de montage artistique. Les spectateurs mettent la pièce en mouvement par de simples arrangements d'objets et reçoivent un cadeau créatif à la fin. L'œuvre explore de manière ludique le processus créatif à travers l'haptique, la disposition d'objets, la description verbale, le dessin, la danse/le mouvement, l'écriture, le langage et la récitation. La pièce est interprétée « en français » par une troupe bilingue d'artistes de l'Atlantique travaillant dans les domaines de la danse, du théâtre et de la performance. Par le biais d'une expérience artistique en direct basée sur la durée, cette œuvre rassemble les gens - spécialistes ou non, artistes ou public, visiteurs ou habitants - par le biais d'incitations créatives qui célèbrent le jeu, l'imagination collective et le travail d'équipe. Brick by Brick is part interactive performance, part installation. Participants - children and their families- arrive at an open, outdoor, playing space filled with disorganized piles of cardboard boxes. Three actors, dressed in construction gear, will greet participants in character. They will lay out the rules of the activity and invite participants into the project. The rules - this city can only be designed by children. Adults are there to follow and assist only. The actors will ask some guiding questions of the participants - what do you love about your city, what does your dream city look like, etc. Participants will have one hour to build their city.
After the building is complete, the installation will be open to anyone to wander through and explore. The actors, having supported the children in the building of the city, will then pose as guides, explaining the different buildings and intentions behind the creation of the city based on what they observed during the building process.

Brique par brique est à la fois une performance interactive et une installation. Les personnes participantes, des enfants et leurs familles, arrivent dans un espace de jeu ouvert et en plein air, rempli de piles de cartons désorganisées. Trois acteurs, vêtus de tenues de chantier, accueillent les personnes participantes dans leur personnage. Ils énoncent les règles de l'activité et invitent les gens à prendre part au projet. L'une des règles est que cette ville ne peut être conçue que par des enfants. Les adultes ne sont là que pour suivre et aider. Ils poseront ensuite quelques questions : qu'aimez-vous dans votre ville? À quoi ressemble la ville de vos rêves? etc. Les personnes participantes auront une heure pour construire leur ville.
Une fois la construction achevée, l'installation sera ouverte à tout le monde, qui pourra s'y promener et l'explorer. Les acteurs, qui auront aidé les enfants à construire la ville, joueront alors le rôle de guides et expliqueront les différents bâtiments ainsi que les intentions qui se cachent derrière la création de la ville, sur la base de ce qu'ils auront observé pendant le processus de construction.

A giant Wheel of Convergence will be erected for The Arts Atlantic Symposium as an interactive performative experience. Each colorful section of the wheel presents an action engaged with ideas of social justice that the performers will act out once the wheel has been spun. There will also be blank sections where witnesses will write in their own actions. Actions may be very clear or more complex; however, they will be chosen from the desires of the performers/witnesses to evoke transformations within the world that they want to see.
In this performance, witnesses will spin the wheel, and we (the performers) will act out the action as a collective. The witness who spun the wheel (or other witnesses) are invited to join in. The action will be performed until the wheel is spun again. This is a durational work lasting from the beginning to the end of one day of The Arts Atlantic Symposium.
Wheel of Convergence examples how different people with different lived experiences (and potentially different genders, races, abilities, socioeconomic statuses, communities, sexual orientations, and others) embody convergence as a problem-solving strategy to evoke personal and political changes we desire within the world. The ways we use our differences in performing an action will provoke new, interesting, absurd strategies that have the potential to create unique outcomes within desires for social justice. The outcomes may only be shifts in a present union. However, I believe that within intersectional present experiences, transformations will always come to a realization.

ARTificial.jpg is a multimedia installation of ink/graphite drawings on wooden tiles inspired by the occasional absurdity of text-to-image AI art, accompanied by a stop-motion animated experimental short film using the images created throughout this project. While AI art is not used in my final presentation of this series, these drawings are rough, analog stand-ins for their digital counterparts. The animation and static images operate together to form a layered succession of surrealist, shapeshifting artworks, sequentially evolving and becoming something entirely new from start to finish.
AI has become a contentious talking point in present-day discourse throughout the past decade. However, I would argue that most all contemporary art is explicitly or implicitly derivative, and I hope to call these ideas into question with this series. While the concept of authorship in this case is certainly valid, I hope to challenge preconceptions of AI art as an absolute threat and the notion of reproduction as inherently transgressive or fraudulent.
There is joy to be found in new technologies that afford us seemingly endless trial and error, as they can allow room for experimentation and happy accidents. I hope to posit an exploratory, alternative approach to this alternate frontier of digital creation. While I acknowledge the many pitfalls and problematic aspects of AI, this series will operate as an optimistic perspective on an ever-present, albeit a little bit absurdist, silver lining as it familiarizes the artist and viewer with the anatomy of imaginary objects.

ARTificial.jpg est une installation multimédia composée de dessins à l'encre et au graphite sur des carreaux de bois, s'inspirant de l'absurdité occasionnelle de l'art IA texte-image. Elle est accompagnée d'un court-métrage expérimental animé en stop-motion utilisant les images créées tout au long de ce projet. Bien que l'art de l'IA ne soit pas utilisé dans ma présentation finale de cette série, ces dessins sont des substituts analogiques bruts pour leurs homologues numériques.
L'animation et les images statiques fonctionnent ensemble pour former une succession de couches d'œuvres d'art surréalistes, évoluant séquentiellement et devenant quelque chose d'entièrement nouveau du début à la fin.
L'IA est devenue un sujet de discussion controversé dans le discours actuel tout au long de la dernière décennie. Cependant, je dirais que la plupart des œuvres d'art contemporaines sont explicitement ou implicitement dérivées, et j'espère remettre en question ces idées avec cette série. Bien que le concept de paternité dans ce cas soit certainement valable, j'espère remettre en question les idées préconçues selon lesquelles l'art de l'IA est une menace absolue et que la reproduction est intrinsèquement transgressive ou frauduleuse.
Il y a de la joie à trouver dans les nouvelles technologies qui nous permettent de faire des essais et des erreurs apparemment sans fin, car elles peuvent laisser place à l'expérimentation et aux heureux accidents. J'espère proposer une approche exploratoire et alternative de ce domaine de la création numérique. Bien que je reconnaisse les nombreux pièges et les aspects problématiques de l'IA, cette série fonctionnera comme une perspective optimiste, présentant une lueur d'espoir, bien qu'un peu absurde, en familiarisant l'artiste et le spectateur avec l'anatomie des objets imaginaires.

Could convergent acts of care between human and more-than-human bodies prompt mutual flourishing?
GroundCover is an interactive installation that invites rest, recuperation and shared moments. Crafted to nurture both human and more than human bodies, GroundCover is an object of care that takes the form of a weighted blanket. Installed in a sensory-conscious environment designed for quiet connection or solitary bouts of respite from crowds, schedule following, or moments of overwhelm and overstimulation, GroundCover can be accessed and used freely whenever needed.
Weighted blankets propel autonomic nervous systems into “rest” mode, reducing symptoms of anxiety; and are also used in gardening and soil remediation processes, to care for plants through the winter, enrich soil, and prevent erosion. GroundCover will be returned to the earth to support ecosystems and growth, slowly deteriorating and, finally, sprouting new life. What to expect from the GroundCover installation space: Tactile objects of care and sensorial aids to be used freely, a library to engage with at any time, sensorial aids (earplugs, notebooks, blankets, fidget toys etc.) space to reflect & recharge.

Couvre-sol est une installation interactive qui invite au repos, à la récupération et aux moments partagés. Conçu pour nourrir à la fois les corps humains et les corps plus qu'humains, Couvre-sol est un objet de soin qui prend la forme d'une couverture lestée. Installée dans un environnement sensoriel conçu pour une connexion tranquille, ou pour des moments solitaires de répit après les foules, les horaires ou les moments d'intimidation et de surstimulation, Couvre-sol peut être consultée et utilisée librement chaque fois que nécessaire.
Les couvertures lestées propulsent le système nerveux autonome en mode « repos », réduisant ainsi les symptômes d'anxiété. Elles sont également utilisées dans les processus de jardinage et d'assainissement des sols pour prendre soin des plantes pendant l'hiver, enrichir le sol et prévenir l'érosion. Couvre-sol sera rendu à la terre pour soutenir les écosystèmes et la croissance, en se détériorant lentement et, finalement, en faisant germer une nouvelle vie. Que peut-on attendre de l'espace d'installation de Couvre-sol? Des objets tactiles de soin et des aides sensorielles à utiliser librement, une bibliothèque à consulter à tout moment, des aides sensorielles (bouchons d'oreille, cahiers, couvertures, cubes tactiles, etc.) et un espace pour réfléchir et se ressourcer.

EN: This installation combines oral and community history with birch bark basketry to remember and renew the relationship between Wolastoqiyik and the mokalipuwok (caribou) who inhabited Wolastokuk for thousands of years – roughly from the time of the last ice age until the early 1900s, at which point herds were broken up or driven into other regions by a culture of overhunting and by the introduction of deadly parasites.
The first basket, made from etched winter bark and spruce root, carries community history and the story of the last mokalip harvested in the area colonially known as Tay Creek, New Brunswick. The second basket dates from the nineteenth-century; it carries the story of its own journey and restoration, connecting each of us to a time when mokalipuwok travelled seasonally across this land. This basket also remembers histories of environmental change in Wolastokuk, and while this piece could be restored, it could never be reproduced because of its size and because of the decreasing flexibility of Gluscap’s gift, the birch bark.
Both of these baskets remember a land that can hold mokalipuwok and speak to the responsibilities of humans to protect and honour that connection. Although Wolastokuk can no longer hold the caribou, the land continues to hold caribou food – lichens that, while common, are extremely sensitive to air pollution – and in this sense the land is lonely for the mokalipuwok and awaits their return. The land is also lonely for the people and holds everything they need to live good lives. These baskets are about how calling on the mokalipuwok is a commitment to the active maintenance and protection of a world that can hold them.

Cette installation allie l'histoire orale et communautaire à la vannerie d'écorce de bouleau pour rappeler et renouveler la relation entre les Wolastoqiyik et les mokalipuwok (caribous) qui ont habité Wolastokuk pendant des milliers d'années. Cela représente approximativement la durée de la dernière période glaciaire, jusqu'au début des années 1900, époque à laquelle les troupeaux ont été dispersés ou chassés vers d'autres régions par une chasse abusive et par l'introduction de parasites mortels. Le premier panier, fabriqué à partir d'écorce de bouleau gravée et de racines d'épinette, porte l'histoire de la communauté et celle du dernier mokalip récolté dans la région colonialement connue sous le nom de Tay Creek, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Le second panier date du XIX^e siècle ; il porte l'histoire de son propre voyage et de sa restauration, reliant chacun d'entre nous à une durée où les mokalipuwok se déplaçaient de manière saisonnière sur cette terre. Ce panier rappelle également l'histoire des changements environnementaux survenus à Wolastokuk. Bien que cette pièce puisse être restaurée, elle ne pourra jamais être reproduite en raison de sa taille et de la flexibilité décroissante de l'écorce de bouleau, cadeau de Gluscap.
Ces deux paniers rappellent une terre qui peut contenir des mokalipuwok et évoquent la responsabilité des humains de protéger et d'honorer ce lien. Bien que Wolastokuk ne puisse plus accueillir les caribous, la terre continue de contenir leur nourriture, des lichens qui, bien que communs, sont extrêmement sensibles à la pollution de l'air. À cet égard, la terre est solitaire pour les mokalipuwok et attend leur retour. Elle est également solitaire pour les gens, car elle contient tout ce dont nous avons besoin pour mener une vie saine. Ces paniers montrent que l'appel aux mokalipuwok est un engagement à maintenir et à protéger activement un monde qui peut les accueillir.

Maddie Alexander’s project “Testimony” investigates the barriers of accessing gender-affirming care for trans folks. In this installation of Testimony, they focus on time in relation to medical transition. He creates ritualistic assemblages out of sacred trans items: his testosterone bottles, medical documents, and archival trans imagery. In these assemblage works documenting their life and lineage as a trans person; these altars are spaces of reflection, created through intentionally durational methods. These works consider Alexander’s experiences of time passing, waiting for care. By creating an archive of their own transitional lineage, shared alongside other archival trans lineages, these histories meet together in the worlds we’ve created for ourselves.

Le projet de Maddie Alexander, qui s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un travail de recherche en cours depuis trois ans, étudie les obstacles à l'accès des personnes transgenres à des soins adaptés à leur sexe. Dans cette installation de Témoignage, iel se concentre sur la durée de la transition médicale. Iel crée des assemblages rituels à partir d'objets trans sacrés : ses flacons de testostérone, des documents médicaux et des images d'archives. Ces œuvres d'assemblage documentent sa vie et sa lignée en tant que personne trans; ces autels sont des espaces de réflexion, créés par des méthodes intentionnellement durables. Ce travail prend en compte les expériences d'Alexander concernant le temps qui passe et l’attente des soins. En créant une archive de leur propre lignée transitionnelle, partagée avec d'autres lignées trans archivées, ces histoires se rencontrent dans les mondes que nous avons créés pour nous-mêmes.

This is a two monitor video installation about human and Nature’s coexistence, a topographical exploration of human interventions in the environment. What happens when we abandon built human spaces? The Quest video camera walks through landscapes discovering an absent human presence in Nature where wildlife and vegetation have slowly taken back their ecology and repurposed the ex-human landscape.
The impact of our constructed habitats—concrete, metals, the removal of trees, rocks and wildlife habitat—when deserted is shown here slowly reversed. The earth and the ocean tenaciously erode our presence, incorporating our leftovers into natural habitats.
An abandoned concrete bridge, a burnt-out home foundation and a smashed fishing boat were all left to disintegrate within Nature’s spaces as sad reminders of human endeavour and discarded dreams. The video discovers that Nature has retaken and grown around these incursions; grasses and shrubs have grown through them and animals have established their own homes. But our garbage remains, like plastic bags found in bodies of water slowly disintegrating and poisoning the water.
Questions about our responsibility to the natural world, and evidence of our ongoing irresponsible destruction and lack of ecological awareness is everywhere. From the landscape of the Tantramar marshes by the Bay of Fundy to the lava fields of Iceland there is no main character in the video except for the camera and the landscape, and there is no end in sight of the quest to understand how far we have affected the natural world.

Il s'agit d'une installation vidéo à deux moniteurs sur la coexistence de l'humain et de la nature, une exploration topographique des interventions humaines dans l'environnement. Que se passe-t-il lorsque nous abandonnons les espaces humains construits? La caméra vidéo Quête se promène dans les paysages et découvre une présence humaine absente dans la nature, où la faune et la végétation ont lentement repris leur écologie et réaménagé le paysage ex-humain.
L'impact de nos habitats construits (béton, métaux, élimination des arbres, des rochers et des habitats naturels) est ici lentement inversé lorsqu'ils sont désertés. La terre et l'océan érodent avec ténacité notre présence, incorporant nos restes dans des habitats naturels.
Un pont en béton abandonné, les fondations d'une maison brûlée et un bateau de pêche brisé ont tous été laissés à l'abandon dans les espaces naturels, comme de tristes rappels des efforts humains et des rêves abandonnés. La vidéo montre que la nature a repris ses droits et s'est développée autour de ces incursions; les herbes et les arbustes ont poussé à travers elles et les animaux ont établi leurs propres maisons. Mais nos déchets demeurent, comme en témoignent les sacs en plastique trouvés dans les plans d'eau qui se désintègrent lentement et empoisonnent l'eau.
Les questions sur notre responsabilité à l'égard du monde naturel, les preuves de notre destruction irresponsable et de notre manque de conscience écologique sont omniprésentes. Du paysage des marais de Tantramar dans la baie de Fundy aux champs de lave d'Islande, il n'y a pas de personnage principal dans la vidéo, si ce n'est la caméra et le paysage, et il n'y a pas de fin en vue à la quête de compréhension de l'impact que nous avons eu sur le monde naturel.

Within (mes) limit(e)s is a re-construction of work stemming from the 2021 Cross Cultural Creative Residency (Kouchibouguac National Park). During a 10 day stay, I captured a large quantity of photographic images on various film (35mm, 120mm and 4x5), as well as video and sound recordings - and some written testimonials from the other residency artists. This project allows me to expose/validate my own internal dialogue vis-à-vis the convergence of subjective realities and shared ideas around intrapersonal dialogues (the conversations we have with ourselves). By inviting the viewer to participate by sharing a recurring or ruminating thought, or a private conversation, mantra, idea or secret it invites them to reflect on how they communicate with themselves and the effects it may have on their subjective realities. This work was initially presented as Within (ses) limit(e)s in Wayfinding - an exhibition that brought together ten artists, of varied disciplines and diverse practices, all based in so-called New Brunswick, a result of the third instalment of the CCCR a partnership between ArtsLink NB, l’AAAPNB, and Mawi’Art

Images rémanentes is a public art trail located in the City of Moncton, which integrates 13 current works by the following artists: Alisa Arsenault, Maryse Arseneault, Jared Betts, Mathieu Boucher Côté, Jean-Denis Boudreau, Marjolaine Bourgeois, Luc A. Charette, Mario Doucette, Marika Drolet-Ferguson, Emilie Grace Lavoie, Mathieu Léger, Jacinthe Loranger and Dominik Robichaud. Inaugurated in 2018, this permanent exhibition of new works was jointly organized by curators Michelle Drapeau and Elise Anne LaPlante. The works created for this trail tell the history of art in Acadia in southeastern New Brunswick by highlighting the exceptional contribution of events, entities and cultural actors to the vitality of the contemporary Acadian art community, from the 1960s to today.

Imago Artist-Run Print Studio and St Michael's Printshop are thrilled to announce a unique collaboration. Each studio will select two of their members to create prints on the theme of "Convergence." This theme not only symbolizes the joining forces of the two printshops but also highlights the collaborative spirit inherent in printmaking and shared studio spaces. Celebrating the vibrant printmaking tradition in the Atlantic provinces, the artists will exchange their work so each artist will have a set of the prints. The project will culminate in two exhibitions. The prints will show first at Imago during the Arts Atlantic Symposium and later at St Michael's Printshop, offering an inspiring glimpse into the power of artistic collaboration.

Drawing from wolastoqey art practices and early socialist art movements, the duo will examine how artists are rethinking everyday objects, transforming our interior spaces into an extension of the studio.
At the heart of this presentation lies the hypothesis that artistic intention and its plural expressions enrich our domestic lives. Sculptural objects, often seen as works of art distinct from the everyday world, take on new life when integrated into our interior spaces. Guillaume Adjutor Provost and Natasha Sacobie, both artists working with forms that have certain references to functionality, will examine practices that seek to redefine the relationship between work and functional object. Furthermore, the artists will elaborate on their recent project, Soif d’illusions/Illusion of the Self, presented at the Keillor House Museum in Dorchester during the Summer 2024. Sculptural art, far from being reserved for elitist spaces, becomes a transformative force accessible to all, re-enchanting our daily lives with an aesthetic that transcends the common to reach the extraordinary. This presentation aims to provoke reflection on the way in which art can transcend its definitions to enrich and sublimate our personal spaces.

Building Home: A Glimpse into the World of Youth Housing

This project started as a research initiative where we held one-on-one interviews with youth in a Housing First for Youth (HF4Y) program to capture what they felt was important to share about their lives before and after engaging in a housing program. From there, we put together a team made up of artists, youth experts, case managers, and researchers to transform the housing experiences that had been shared with us into an art installation that pushes for change in our communities.
Throughout a series of sessions with youth, we have been able to check-in and make sure that what is important to their experiences are properly represented. Youth have provided feedback, made decisions over what is included and how it gets represented, and got involved in the creation of the installation. We are working together to respect the stories that youth have shared with us and bring these ideas to life.
In all, this project aims to alleviate stigma and promote advocacy for better housing options for youth. It promotes housing as a basic-need and a human right. It highlights the importance of understanding the experiences of youth who struggle with homelessness and housing precarity. It leverages our partnerships to promote youth voice and holds youth housing and support programs to higher standards.

In an increasingly polarized world, it takes certain conditions for a harmonious convergence of opposites to occur. How do we get to a space where the polarized viewpoints feel safe to hear each other for the sake of peacemaking? Art that counsels, mediates and/or provides a space for serenity can assist. This lecture will discuss art and practices that create spaces for peaceful conversations to take place. This talk will provide an overview of the various experiences Musgrave has had working with arts and wellness including her thesis research into visual music and mindfulness, working part-time as the artist-teacher for the VanGo! program in the public school system, expressive arts-based activities with youth and combining alternative healing practices with her art.

Cette conférence traitera de l'art et des pratiques qui créent des espaces où des conversations pacifiques peuvent avoir lieu. Cette conférence donnera un aperçu des diverses expériences que Mme Musgrave a eu dans le domaine des arts et du bien-être, notamment sa recherche de thèse sur la musique visuelle et la pleine conscience, son travail à temps partiel en tant qu'artiste enseignante pour le programme VanGo! dans le système scolaire public, les activités basées sur les arts expressifs avec les jeunes, et la combinaison de pratiques de guérison alternatives avec son art.

By adopting a cultural policy, the municipality is demonstrating its interest in the cultural life of its community, and conveying that it intends to play a part in improving the quality of life for all its residents. L’Empremier live at Beaubassin (1970) est une œuvre vidéo qui prend la forme d’un long métrage pastiche du film Live at Pompeii (1972, 1974) d’Adrian Maben où l’on voit le groupe mythique Pink Floyd jouer dans l’amphithéâtre vide de cette fameuse île détruite par l’éruption volcanique du Mont Vésuve. À Beaubassin, les ruines du Fort Beauséjour – situées à la frontière entre le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Nouvelle-Écosse – servent d’amphithéâtre dans lequel les esprits du passé (ceux des ancêtres acadien·ne·s, condamné·e·s ici, en 1755, à la déportation et à des années d’errance) sont convoqués comme spectateur·ice·s fantomatiques.
Adoptant le décor de l’été 1970, Live at Beaubassin met en scène un·e chansonnièr·e acadien·ne fictive – Joan Dularge – alors qu’iel approche la décennie tumultueuse des années 1970, préoccupé·e par l’actualité́ LGBT[Q2IA+] au lendemain des Stonewall riots (28 juin 1969) et motivé·e par sa condition de personne nouvellement trans-out. Lors de séquences documentaires encore tournées à l’image de Live at Pompeii (version de 1974), on a l’occasion de voir le processus de création de de Joan et son groupe L’Empremier, alors que ses membres – surtout la chanteuse principale – ont le regard tourné résolument vers le futur, aux prises avec des enjeux d’actualité :
« Jouez-vous de la musique acadienne ? »

« Est-ce que la langue est un enjeu avec votre producteur anglophone ? »
« Est-ce que l'acadienneté est une forme de queerness ? »

L’Empremier live at Beaubassin (1970) is a video piece that takes on the form of the “feature film”, citing in pastiche Adrian Maben’s Live at Pompeii (1972, 1974) wherein the mythical group Pink Floyd is seen playing in the empty amphitheatre of that famous island destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. On site at Beaubassin, the ruins of Fort Beauséjour (Fort Cumberland in English) – located near the border separating New Brunswick and Nova Scotia – serve as a stage on which the spirits of the past (those of Acadian ancestors who, in 1755, were condemned from this same land to deportations and to years of wandering) are conjured as ghostly spectators.
Embracing the backdrop of the summer of 1970, this film stars the fictitious Acadian singer-songwriter Joan Dularge (they/she) in their second documentary role as they approach the tumultuous decade of the 1970s, preoccupied by LGBT[Q2IA+] issues in the wake of the Stonewall riots (June 28th 1969) and motivated by their condition as a newly out trans fem. Documentary sequences, once again, shot in the style of Live at Pompei (1974 version), show Joan and their musicians spending time in the studio, creating their songs as well as responding to questions on contemporary issues :
“Is the music you play considered Acadian music?”

Is language an issue when working with your anglophone producer?”
“Is acadianness a form of queerness?”
